I don't think we really need it as you can do so much more on the regular part of the forum than you can on other forums anyway, like pat's boobs (ha ha). A lot of people can't access this site from work cos of the boobs on the front page (so I'm told) and peeps like me who use it at work have to be careful anyway cos of the semi clad females at the top

having said that I don't see any harm in keeping it either

I got the password and I'll use it and maybe post stuff, but I won't worry if it stays or goes. But I have decided to vote for keeping it cos I think peeps are worrying about nothing, it isn't gonna be a porn site, the reaction has just got out of hand methinks

maybe changing the name like happybiker said will solve the problem?

Choprocker
21-10-2004, 08:59 AM

I think it should be closed. But not for the obvious reason.

The fact that there are scantily clad females and Pat and Blackhack's avatars on the the rest of the forum makes 100% essentially non work safe anyway.

If the primary concern was that kids may see "adult" stuff, then I'll stand by my earlier comments that kids should not be using the Internet unsupervised. 100% cannot be held responsible for some kid stumbling across adult material.

With regard to images/videos, it would be more beneficial from a "Work Safe/Kid Safe" point of view if, rather than posting pictures, people posted links to the pictures instead. That way, you could include in your post "Picture of $whatever - NOT WORK SAFE", then it's up to the individual to follow it up, with the additional benefit of it not taking up space on the web server running the 100% site.

As for text, what is there that's likely to be said in a post that would warrant it being in the "adult area" anyway? If it's extreme, then there's plenty of other places for it on the net rather than a biker site. If you really wanted to, you could activate a word filter, but they're as much use as a chocolate tea pot - examples can be provided.

It is impossible to censor the Internet. Self censorship is the only achievable goal and that cannot be done by placing a separate area for adult material, because there is still no mechanism to stop people posting similar stuff in the general area anyway!

So, bottom line

Take the area away
Allow people to use a bit of common sense about posting
Delete anything that breaks the law

Keep it. If its down to the fact that people don't like what it says they don't have to look. I personally say get rid of the workshop section 'cause I don't like it because at this time of year it makes me feel obligated to go and freeze to death in the shed. This brings on the toughts of piles, chill blanes and imminent discussions about divorce.

Well I would vote if there was a 3rd option - like, I don't care either way!

I haven't got a password for it but I don't mind if others do - not my problem.

I hope that it wasn't my thread about the lack of scantily clad males to gawp at that provoked the appearance of the new section - cos I was misunderstood and peeps thought I wanted nudes - maybe thats a male/female thing cos males like to look at nude females but thats cos we look much better with no clothes than they do! Ok, I'll stop rambling....

Now it's there it might as well stay. Although it is of no interest to me, and I won't be requesting a password, I also abhor censorship and believe adults are capable of deciding for themselves what to look at and kids should not have unsupervised access to the net so shouldn't see it. May be a more relevant question would be shouldn't we have be asked if we wanted it BEFORE it was added! We're always being told it is OUR forum, so unilateral actions like this should not happen!
As for the viewing at work issue, in my experience most companies and organisations have a blanket ban on all staff using the net for non-work related (i.e. personal)use anyway, so whether there's tits and bums on the page or not you can still be disciplined (ooeer missus) for looking at work if caught - but then that's just another rule made for breaking!

I don't disagree with your point, but I have a few observations to make.

1) Let's say that someone chooses not to get a password for the restricted area, because they're worried about what they'll encounter. A thread starts in the restricted area that becomes relevant to everyone, then person X will never see it. That's one reason why I'd prefer that everything got posted in the main forum areas, with the caveat being that people are sensible about what they post (see my earlier post for ideas)

2) I'd still like someone to justify the reasons why it was created in the first place. I'll make no bones about it, I haven't got a problem with any content on the Internet, but as an IT Manager with oodles of experience relating to content and its legal implications (including 6 years at a major law firm) I fail to see the need for the "Cert 18" area. Why create something you don't require. The site already contains images that "Concerned of Berkshire" would disagree with.

Have you had any complaints about your tits pat?
Pmsl, wot a cracking question to ask.

To tell you the truth i dont believe Pat had to ask this question.
We are a culture of openess on a lot of things tis why we like it.
At least Pat put it in a total differnt section and had password entry, some websites just have have it in there normal forums/site. which i think was the correct way of going bout things
Cant f*cking win whatever you do.

What the fcuk has it got to do with biking?

It doesn't belong on a website supposedly for bikers.
Most people who use this site know what it is like. However , more pornographic items may attract non-bikers who may take over that section of the forum. If you don't know what scum lurks behind a keyboard pretending to be someone it ain't you need to wake up, get yer head outta yer arse and smell the roses. Another small point how do you know when little johnny aged 12 tells you he's over 18? Does it protect children, Adult sites usually require a credit card which implies 18ishness.

Get the smut back on the main pages where they belong!

You make a great case, here for keeping the section. So why take it away? that's censorship!

The Forum Members have always been a great advocate of banning censorship and supporters of free speech!

The Section was put here for our use! If you don't like it, don't use it.

By the same token, Where's the Kids section then? Some of us must have kids, and who are interested in bikes, so why can't they have a section to themselves? Bikers are a shrinking race by all accounts, so supporting the younger generation should also be in the forefront of our minds!

I'm for freedom of speech and choice! so keep the Cert 18 section, it's Our choice!

Censorship is having a Cert 18 section. By stating that I can only air certain views and say certain words somewhere else then you have silenced my freedom of speech and my freedom of choice.
I disagree! Cert 18 is only censorship in respect of letting minors view inappropriate images or stories! and this is only for their protection. God knows, they grow up early enough by getting hold of "soft porn" girlie mags and teenage fashion mags. they can also gain access to porn sites via the internet, and you must be naive to think that kids don't know how to turn off "parental controls" on the computer. They are brought up virtually from infants, nowadays, using the damn things. I am 44 and have great difficulty in setting the bloody VCR! Technology races ahead of me far quicker than anything I know!

However, as we get older we form our own opinions and voice them. Okay, so I don't agree with you, but "censorship" is enforced when either one or the other party deliberately blocks the others right to reply, in order to enforce their own views on others. an example would be if Pat disagreed with both of us and deleted this thread and said that the Cert 18 section stays or goes irrespective of the Forum Members majority wishes then that is censorship.

So we have a Cert 18 section, whether we use it or not is or choice! Nobody has to use it. This is a biker's site, but it doesn't have to soley be dedicated to bikes. As 100% Biker states, it about biker lifestyle, which can emcompass anything. Which means if you enjoy another sport or hobby, and you can ivolve using your bike at the same time then you have a lifestyle which could be construed as a biker lifestyle! mind you, you must have a pretty sad lifestyle if you travel miles to a train station on your bike, just to sit at the end of a platform just to take down train numbers!

Bloody 'ell thats just upset TaxiDave and Fayji!

It all boils down to the same thing we have argued about for years "The freedom of choice" If you take away freedom of choice then that is a dictatorship and I thought that we lived in a fairly liberal open society, that allowed us to make up our own minds, not somewhere that you can't at least say what you like, any way you like.
