virago 535 dx

i sold my 535 to a mate only 8000miles from new
suddenly started not going over 65 miles an hour
took it to a dealer after a bill of £800 quid for various bits after he crashed it as well it went well again
just recently it has started only doing 65 again
tearing my hair out
any idears
also reserve seems to have stopped working but getting a positive click from the solenoid
doing my head in and his wallet
any suggestions seems like fuel to me but not sure
dealer reckoned exhaust full of petrol ?
and oil in the bores but seems to start and run a1 just wont go over 65
only problem i ever had was water in the side stand switch

Have you checked the fuel flow rate at the carb end of the fuel line if it is at all held up in any way this can cause the lack of top end speed the flow rate can be slowed down by a slightly dirty filter or a tap problem and i have had problems with breakdown of the fuel line lining causing the flow to slow remember you are looking for a very slight problem that only affects the bike at flat out so even a little slow down in flow can be significant
The other thing to check is the fuel tank breather if it gets bent or blocked in anyway on prolonged journneys the tank can start to vaacum and it makes it difficult for the pump to deliver the right fuel flow if there is one fitted hope this helps

the carb diaphrams are well known to go on these,and also it depends on how well they are seated, and this causes carb problems
will have heard of reserve problem you you need to check connections as i believe it collects crud..
