either wait till it settles and very carefully pick it up or try to catch it in a sheet, they are very delicate though.

You have to catch the bugger first. :D

Put on a pair of gloves and try to gently get hold of it whilst being careful not to lose your grip.

, Help Needed with a Bat
I keep finding bats in my house
Always wear gloves to handle bats. If you have conerns call the Helpine on 0845 1300 228.
If you are frequently finding bats in your house, especially baby bats, then it may indicate that you have bats roosting in your roof.

Baby bats are very small and have little fur. When their mothers go out to feed in the evening, the unsupervised babies sometimes end up in strange places in the house as they are small enough to fall down tiny cracks next to pipes or between floorboards.

If you have been moving items round in the loft space, and then notice that bats keep coming into the house then it might be that you have inadvertently blocked the hole that they use to exit the roof. This means that the bats are finding their way into the house as they have been forced to look for an alternative exit point. You should go back to the loft and move away anything that is potentially blocking an exit (for example anything that is against outside walls), and then contact your local Statutory Nature Conservation Organisation for a roost visit.

Baby bats are born in June and are so tiny that they often fall down tiny gaps when left unattended by their mothers. Thus they often end up in unusual places such as the kitchen sink, or the shower. If you do find a baby bat then click here for advice on what to with it. You might also wish to contact your local Statutory Nature Conservation Organisation for a roost visit.

If you think you have bats roosting in your roof click here for further information.

Got it!

I think I found the same site as ScouseLee. We waited until it settled on the ceiling and then put a box over it, and slid a piece of cardboard over the top, then took it outside.

At one point, there were two of them, but one got out on it's own.

This has happened twice before so I suspect we may have a roost somewhere. I don't mind sharing my house with them, but I don't want to hurt them.

when my eldest was 5 (now 14), she was playing in her room (converted loft) with a friend when they came down for a drink.
She then so casually said "Oh, Mum, there's a dead bat in my room"!!!

I don't know how it died (could it of been the 2 cats????), but she wasn't even phased!

Tennis raquets are the weapon of choice for bat removal, especially the big alloy framed ones.

Aah, had forgotten they were a protected species here. We used to get them flying around the bedroom at night in Canada. Hence the tennis raquet.

tried to on numerous occasions, but it was a futile effort. They appear to be too stupid to find an open window  And they crap everywhere if you just leave them to it.

and they can "see" a hockey stick coming, but not a tennis raquet. :D

Bat knocked itself out when it flew into the (closed) patio doors where I used to live. I heard the "clonk" and the poor little thing was lying on the patio senseless and getting cold.

So I did the decent thing and hooked its little feet on to my bra and kept it warm under my tee shirt until it started to come round.

Then I let it loose in the garden.... I like bats...They have such beautiful little faces....

bats are a protected species and if they roost in your house you ain't allowed to remove them - at least that was the case in scotland in 1990 when my mate bought a house which had loads of bats in the attic - after they left of their own accord she blocked all access and had no problems since

Womble_Lancs
01-06-2006, 07:51 PM
I don't mind sharing my roof with them, but I'd prefer not to have to share my bedroom with them.

Apparently you can have them removed, but you have to get your local Bat Conservation Officer to arrange it. A mate of mine had it done and he said it was a right faff.
