Ive got an XS 850 hardtail chop, thats running on home made baffles..
The problem is...they strangle the acceleration due to too much back preasure...

I've been told that as its an " W " suffix plate that the law on exhaust volume does not apply to this bike

Anyone know the law in relation to this ??

at the end of the day it's down to the discretion of the tester BUT pre 86 bikes don't require any bs stamps etc.,as long as the tester doesn't think you're taking the piss you'll pass!My 85 vmax had holeshot 4 into 2's on you could shove a broomhandle right down em and they passed OK!

try volkswagon flame aresters of the old beetle. I use them on my chop ... start with them as you get them then add wadding to create more back pre4ssure - remove some if ya got too much

QUOTE

I've been told that the MOT rules have changed recently. BS stamps are no longer required for any vehicle. As long as the Exhaust is not too noisy and it does not have 'Not For Road Use' or 'For competition use only' stamped on the can, it should be OK.

Pre '86 bikes were exempt from the requirements to have a BS mark, but were still subject to the noise regs.[/QUOTE]

You're right

try HIGHWAY HAWK they have removable baffles both long and short ones depending on how much noise you wish to make i have used them on engines developing in excess of 150 bhp who knows it may work for you they are cheap enough to give it a go

I'm not that bothered about the MOT station as I can put them in for MOT testing.....I'm just wondering if I would get away with running the bike without baffles at all...Bloody loud though....

You're right

This is the bit that gets me:

"A silencer that is in such a condition or is of such a type that the noise
emitted is clearly in excess of that which would be produced by a
similar machine fitted with a standard silencer in average condition."

In my case I've got a V-Max trike with the standard downpipes but a custom 4-into-2-into-1 stainless system and an unmarked (as far as I can tell) endcan.

Let's just say the trike can be noisy if I open it up - when it was in for MSVA at the start of this year it failed the noise test first time around.

How exactly is "similar machine fitted with a standard silencer in average condition" supposed ot apply in my case? Do they compare it with a stock V-Max? If so well this is an 1985 Max so its before some of the noisy limitations isn't it so do they compare it with a 1985 stock Max or A.N.Other Max?

The regs seem to leave a lot up to the individual MOT tester's descretion. Over here in Norethern Ireland of course the MOT testers are all government employees and so more likely to be "jobsworth":-(

the same thought here...

a
similar machine fitted with a standard silencer in average condition

There isnt such a thing as a similar machine nor a standard silencer ???

Well, not for a hardtail chop anyway............
