Thought I'd take it in to work today to give it one last 'test' after sorting out the fuel problem. Got as far as Newhaven and the whole thing died on me...!

Have headlights etc, just no neutral light and ignition. Starter solenoid clicks when pressed so it can't be that.

Any ideas? have had to take a day off work so I can 'sort it' so would be very grateful for any ideas!

this might sound dumb but have you checked all battery/starter/alternator connections, you could even have a wire with a break in it which you can't see, any terminals which look black or rusty or mucky will break down, try replacing some of em?

apart from that it could be a duff battery or alternator, have you tried bump starting it? If it starts off a bump then won't be alternator and unlikely to be starter if it clicks (though not always).

errrmmmm will try and think of some more....

Agreed this sounds like the problem, maybe simply the earth is loose. ;)

No, he's at home fettling his own bike so's we can both get in to work tomorrow - I'll take the car!
I'm glad it wasn't me on it, I'd have been doing the f*ck off dance in the middle of the road and causing a pile up hazard :)

Sort of - well I'm inside the house and not sat under a bike at nine this evening! I think the problem's due to either ...

... the water that comes out of the bike seat when you sit on it (wet ars3 - how nice!), the way the electrics have all been stuffed in around the battery (there's even an alarm in there ferchrisakes! not that it appears to work or show any way of turning it on and off mind)

...or there's some wire that attaches to the oil level sensor, it looks like it's on the same circuit as the Sidestand switch (though I can't really tell as a slug/snail has eaten it's way through the middle of the wiring diagram - left the manual outside one night during the summer  probably the same ones that have eaten most of the tomatoes!!) it looks like, if there's been a big oil leak, the oil gets all over the connectors (with the casing having been melted away!)

Anyroad, I did 10 miles on it this evening and it seems to be OK. I think Mrs R's looking forward to the day she can splash out on something decent (she's got her heart set on a Triumph, that's about two years old - and not two decades) I'm just glad I don't have to rely on a bike for a living any more (been there! 12 years ago :( )

this may sound rather obvious as well, can you get it to run ok when electrics dry and prior to getting on
if as you say the electrics are a bit stuffed maybe the weight of a rider may push the seat to make contact with electrics and then fizzz stiop

this is something i had on an old triumph, i solved it by putting plastic on base of metalseat to stop contact

Mitch

Yeah, cheers mate, it's a P5, same as mine, which finally got me into work nicely today, all newly braced up with loads of flat steel bar! No more catapulting back end when it hits a pothole! (that's why mine was off' road! smashed the numberplate while it was at it!).

Mine's more of a meccano set than a bike now - cos I can't weld, I have to drill and bolt everything together!

I did put a binbag underneath the seat last night, so that may have something to do with it

Mick

BTW I'm on the lookout for a decent GT550 tank for my sons bike if you know anyone who's got one cheap.

Shudy's supposed to be coming down to clear us out of our GT550 bits this weekend sadly - there's a tank, back wheel, frame, the whole shooting match, except forks and one or two other bits.
