now we had this argument lotsa times

to me led zepp and jimi hendrix aren't heavy metal, neither is black sabbath, deep purple, thin lizzy, ac/dc, scorpions, saxon etc etc

I class them as heavy rock

and heavy metal is that noisy stuff that assaults yer ears

like iron maiden

fact I would class iron maiden as the first heavy metal band

also class megadeath and pantera etc as heavy metal

nowadays it's called thrash metal and is even noisier and nastier, stuff like slipknot

arrrggghhhh

this is of course how I see it, not THE LAW or anything

but I been around a long time listening to lotsa stuff and this is my opinion on the genres

so if we're talking rock I reckon Deep Purple were the first and the best

if we're talking metal then Iron Maiden were the first and the best of that genre but I don't like em much, though having said that - musically they are good

just not my cuppa tea

:D

Weren't Maiden technically NWOBHM (New wave of British Heavy Metal), which indicates that there must have been a previous wave...

I never heard that term before

I remember when I was a teenager the bands we listened to were led zep thin lizzy etc then along came iron maiden and they got called heavy metal and only the lads liked em and they all used to head bang in a pretty violent way so us girls didn't dare go near em...!

yeah i used that term before which is where the confusion comes in, iron maiden were originaly found back in 1978, in 1980 the term new wave of british heavy metal was born, and like huw says the term heavy metal must have been out before that...
i also see an interview (cant remember who it was now) but the term heavy metal was usually tagged to bands that used 'distorted guitar'
this has been the topic of many a night lol... and still no difinitive answers :D

I believe a rock journalist in America first coined the term heavy metal music when writing about Sabbath so I suppose, technicaly (ecstasy) speaking, Black Sabbath was the first heavy mental band! :)

I'd say that Alice Cooper was probably the Father of Heavy Metal. He may not have been termed as HM at the time, but the type of music he put out was definately a forerunner to the late 70's, early 80's HM sound.

So there! :p
