Not for the faint hearted.
A very cruel and bizare act has been carried out up here in the North Cotswold Hills. My dad came out of his house the other morning to find the gate on his drive had been shut during the night. Tied to the gate was a full length horse tail complete with bone and fresh blood. Not being anything like a local tradition I wondered if anyone might know what this strange (and menacing  ) act is supposed to represent? or If anyone has heard of this sort of thing before.

Don't sound like Witchcraft to me mate! Though Mrs R seems to think it might be more a voodoo thing (she says folks've made horses tails into wands before now  )

Gotta admit its got all of us baffled. No reports of a mutilated horse either which poses the question, where the hell did they get the tail from?

Are there any "boneyards" or abattoirs in the area ?

No not for 30-40 miles. We do however have a lot of gypsies gathering locally for the horse fair next week but theres no record of them doing this sort of thing before.

No reason that anyone would have for targeting the farm?

Dads a builder, semi retired. Hes just run from John o Groats to Landsend for charity (not bad for a 62 year old with two replacement hips) and is a pretty much all round good guy. Thats not to say he hasn't pissed people off in the past mind. Who knows. It also turns out that between the time the police left and the environmental health people came out to take it away, someone nicked/removed it. It just gets more weird.

I assume that he's been living there for a while,as opposed to "just moved in"?
Otherwise it may have been aimed at a previous habitant.
Maybe a passig French tourist saw it and walked/drove off eating it !!

Well, I've spent several hours looking for similar situation and come up with a big fatZERO
As for the act of barbary to the poor horse, the b**stards deserve to suffer.
Medieval torture anyone !! :D
I think if someone had mutilated a horse the police would know about it, so probs got the tail from a knackers yard
also could be mistaken identity
sounds similar to the stuff done recently by pro hunting freaks.....dumping dead horses in the road etc
or anti vivisection activists
although I'm against animal testing I do think some people go too far, they are supposed to be non-violent and against causing pain to dumb animals, but some of the things they do just makes them as bad as the people they're against..!
all living things have the same rights, no matter how black their hearts are
which leads me to capital punishment,
nope, won't go there this morning...!

the only thing google spits out is that horses tails are
a) used for male fertility rites
b) the horse is probably dead now.
c) the hair is used in a milk strainer (eh?) for protection against witchcraft.
The popular belief of many people credits equine hair with special virtues. "Honor abides in the manes of horses" is a saying of Mohammed, and in Turkey a horse's tail as an emblem is significant of dignity and exalted position.
weird....
