Hi
My old GL1000 trike, looks to be burning a bit too much oil! Not a lot, but a bit too much!!!!!!

A guy told me that it could be the piston rings that are worn? He also said that! If that was the case I will have to fit a new engine, coss you can't re=bore the old Jap engines! Is this true?

Who is this guy,cos I could get him a job as a comedian! Sure you can get em rebored, but it can be expensive...try David Silver in Suffolk for the spares or Wiseco in Swanley Kent for big bore kits etc.,or if you want a cheaper option see if you can find a secondhand engine

It might be the Valve Stem Seals - as what happened to Mrs R's bike. Dave Silver will probably sell them

WTF !! :(

As far as I was aware anymotor can be rebored,or (re-)sleeved !!

But then I'm far from being an expert

i can highly recomend silvers as one of the better honda spares suppliers out there.
i needed a bottom end gasket set for me honda, everyone else said they don`t do a bottom end set, only top set (@£45) and full gasket sets(@60).
silvers came up trumps with a genuine honda bottom end set of gaskets for £16.50 + P&P :D

The guy actually runs a bike repaire place! I thought it must be possible to do it; however after talking with him I had doubts.

I use Dave Silver for most of my spare's only thing I ain't been able to get off him was a Throttle return cable! But they ain't that important. ;)

Must be one of these new style "mechanics",you know, the ones that loosen and tighten nuts an' bolts.

I bought myselfe a set o' gauges with money, he thought he were gonna get!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

does it smoke: from cold, once its warm, more on one cylinder, more when backing off the throttle or does it just use a lot of oil with no significant smoking but fume from the engine breather?

Wotcha.

Hmm - I'd say a 'Wing motor burning oil is more likely to be valve seals / guides as opposed to bores. Most places refuse to bore 'Wing motors because they don't have "cylinder barrels" as such, they have liners set into the crankcases, and as such, they are an absolute pig to set up in the boring machine. Does anyone do oversize pistons for 'Wing motors ? That would answer the re-bore question.

I had an 1100 wing, and the (sitting on it) left rear cylinder always played up, the plug would gum up and it would run on 3 cylinders...

i used to carry one of them little battery powered sand blast plug cleaners around with me...but we were talking every 50 miles here

i thought it might have been the carbs, so i binned them and fitted a webber of a capri...didnt help.....so i binned the electronic ignition, cut a slot on the left hand cam, and fitted a vw golf distributer......but it was turning the wrong way, and killed points in about 4 miles, so i fitted a luminition kit.......this stopped the plug gumming up as fast, but i only got 100 miles between cleans....so i swapped heads with another wing i had ( i had 5 in all), same, so i gave up and gave the thingy away...

it was cool though,,,full aspencade, mat black, downdraught webber, golf dizzy, 2 dt 125 lc left hand forks, spoked gl1000 front wheel, comstar rear....home made yolks.....lovely.....

actually just a thought......but the original question can old jap engines be rebored?.....the answer is yes

I think also he might mean that with older engines you don't know how many times they've been rebuilt in the past, I know you're only supposed to rebuild any engine 5 times in it's lifetime before it starts getting dodgy and a replacement engine is recommended

something to do with the big end shells, they should be replaced every time and eventually you need to do some regrinding or summat

this also applies to rebores

me ?

I know nothing

don't ask

my memory is poor too

lol

It seems to smoke more on left hand-side under accelaration! The other thing that bothers me is! There is slight oil contamination in water expanssion bottle; however ther is no water in oil. Oil consuption just seems heavy for milage? Compression is good/ same on all pots? Number two pot runs intermitantly cold or colder than other three. Number two spark shows signs of oil contamination and also smells rich?

It could be that it's got a lot going against it (To say the least) :(

By the sounds of it you have a head/headgasket problem !!
So, if thats the case no need for a rebore !! :D

I may however be completely off track, and you may need to change the steering lock !!

Are all the bolts tight (or are they too tight!!) ? Daft question but you never know 'til ya try !!

I thought about it, an' then I realized it don't have a steering lock! Some "B" bust it! lol
