it was as though they hadnt done any sound checks before the gig,the whole thing was like some early 80s electronic band, not a happy bunny, ended up leaving half way through

As discussed before on yer other thread JM does seem to have lost the plot but if the sound was crap that is down to the sound crew.

I used to do the sound for local bands and even without a sound check you should be able to get a good balance after a few songs, yer always playing with the sound that's why yer there.

That's assuming of course there was a sound crew and it had not been left to the roadie to just stick some mics in front of their cabs with a mixer on the side of the stage and let the band get on with it which is fatal cause yer can't get a good sound listening to it from the stage that's why the sound guy is usually out in the crowd so he hears what the audience hears and when the singer (it's always the singer!) says "i can't hear meself" yer just give them some more volume on their monitor rather than turn up their mic

JM doesn't do sound checks! He doesn't even bother to arrive at the venue until the support act is on stage! Last time he played at the venue where I work I had a row with him and his manager when he arrived after the gig had started. We have a side alley which is the load in access to the venue and entrance for performers, BUT, once we open for the audience the alley becomes emergency vehicle access and must be left clear of all vehicles, so we have a post which locks into place at the street end of the alley to keep vehicles out. His manager insisted that I remove the post so that they could bring his car all the way up to the doors for JM to enter the venue. I refused because it would contravene our licence if I did. They weren't very happy! He's playing here again on Friday - I told my boss I won't work it, and I've made sure that if he turns up late again he'll be locked out of the side alley again!
BTW, the sound engineer can only deal with what goes into his system. If it's crap going into the mics you'll only get louder crap coming out of the speakers no matter how good the engineer is!
