View Full Version : Question.
Touring and rallying, I ride with a tank bag, throwover panniers, a full 52l top box with a roll bag strapped to the top, stuff I've acquired fairly cheaply over the years. With BagLady and me, it looks like a block of flats coming down the road. (Whatever happened to the days when I went rallying with a big plastic sheet, some string, a sleeping bag and half a bog roll? Oh yeah, 31 years happened! )
So I've been looking at hard luggage. To fit panniers and carrier, etc, will cost £450 new  but bargains are to be had on evilbay. I've been looking at XJRs with hard luggage and measuring, I should get most of what we carry in two 41l panniers and the top box, and still have room for a spare pair of underpants.
Because of the way it would fit, with integral rear indicators, the panniers would be farther back than my throwovers, giving BagLady an extra 2 inches of room for her legs. May not sound much, fellows, but what woman can resist an extra 2 inches? ;)
OK, the rack without the panniers may not look pretty, but I'm not trying to win any shows with this. The bike does more milage with luggage than without. (I walk to work.) I think this is the practical way for me to go.
So my question.
It's all about image, really.
Would you think me terribly gay if I took a spare pair of underpants with me to rallies?

so what's wrong with just a doss bag and a bit of plastic? sick of people these days, going up to the camp site to pitch their tents then riding up the next day
If you can't carry it on the bike it don't go. ;)

have to agree
but a tent and bag that packs up small enough to not stick out either side of the bike would be nice :p

Advancing years, mate. Creaky joints and failing body parts mean a bit of soft comfort and warmth is essential at rallies.
That's why I take BagLady with me. :D
