I listened to Radio 2 today.. Jeremy Vine again..

Now did u know the union jack..

a) is not protected like other national flags.. i.e if u burn the American flag u go to prison...
b) u cannot parade or wave the flag around now for fear of 'inciting racial hatred', this is due to National Front adopting it as their emblem.. but in america you can plant your flag in your garden.
c) Wales is not represented on the union flag cos it was considered part of england and scotland and ireland were separate.
d) there will be a campaign to protect the flag in view of current anti anglo/british onslaughts from muslim and etc areas.. otherwise it could be redesigned in future years to represent the U.K to reflect all cultures living in it.

Interesting factoid and no bull**** for once from me.

First off, it's NOT the union JACK - it's the union flag! It's only a union jack when it's flown on the jackstaff of one of Her Majesty's ships.
Secondly, the reason you go to jail for messing with 'Old Glory' (the Stars and Stripes of USA) is because yanks pledge allegiance to the flag, we pledge allegiance to the Monarch.

Actually, I'm told it was called the jack even before the naval reason. Look it up on wikipedia :p

Sorry mate, I hate to say you're wrong... but you're wrong :). Some gadgie on radio 4 this morning said it was both Union Flag and Union Jack - that dates back to about 1902 when the admiralty declared it as such or something...

If you want to listen to what the bloke from the Flag Institute (the biggest authority on the subject) said, go here http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/today/listenagain/index.shtml but you'll need real player to listen :p

The reason the americans pledge allegiance to the flag of usa is cos it represents usa which shows national pride... and we don't actually pledge anything...we just have a monarchy. But that wasn't my point.. I was trying to demonstrate that we should protect and be proud of the Union Jack/Flag and keep it safe from alteration to reflect cosmopolitan changes. :D

It's not my flag and now I know it's not protected will quite happily burn it....If only I could bring myself to pay good money for the rag on a pole.

Happy Birthday Union Flag, happy birthday in advance to the queen, Rule Britannia and show some bloody pride low lifes that hate the flag cause thousands of poor bastards died making this island for you and your pissy attitudes under that flag. If it wasnt for the unity of this country and fighting under one flag half of your families would have been up against the fuckin wall, remember that and hang your fuckin heads in shame for putting down the flag.

I have fought for the flag but still don't like it. but get what you are saying Rob and it's a fair point besides I live in a place that is part of the UK but not part of the British Isles despite whatever the Scots keep telling us.

The oldest flag in the world is the Danish one. So congrats to both

I don't care if it aint OFFICIALLY the Union Jack.

I wasn't brought up recognising the Union flag, it was THE UNION JACK and fecking proud of it i am too.

Living under it feeds me and my loved ones, clothes me and my loved ones, houses me and my loved ones and when me and my loved ones feel ill, look after us FOR NOTHING.

For all its faults its still the best country in the world to me and i couldn't think of a better place to live.
If you don't like thid country, feck off and make space for someone who does.

Nae probs Rob I was having a bit of fun but as said I know what your getting at.This is one flag that stirs up heated debate as to wether it's the union flag or jack. and part of the problems was the way it was originally introduced and how it sort of stumbled into existence as we know it now. Most flags around the world have come about as an act of parliment but ours did not, Maybe now is the time to re examine this and rectify it.

I must admit Sheltie, i would like to see Wales recognised on the Union Jack/Flag as even though it was annexed at the time of the original design the Union flag has changed somewhat. It wouldnt take a lot to add maybe the dragon in the middle or a yellow line on the diagonal and horizontal (St Davids cross). Just a thought but i dont want to see the flag made unrecognisable etc.

The flag of the union is one of the most instantly recognised flags/brands in the world and may I say one of the most respected.

As much as I would like to see the welsh incorporated into it. Can you really see it happening we would organise a committee who would recommend that a consultant be hired, they in turn would recommend that it goes out to public consultation. A referndum would be called. Blue peter would run a competition and finally it would be put out for competitive tendering and the chinese would win the contract.

Mind you that is only if we can get the country to agree in the first place

Hahahahaha! Get this country to agree on summat? Half of the people wanna leave or dont give a ****, others are only here for the money and know nothing nor do they care what the flag is in this country, loads more hate it etc etc. We'll be lucky to keep a flag at all. I dunno Sheltie, its a bloody shame i think but thats the way of the world i guess.

problem is that if they agree to add bits to the union jack/flag we will end up with a rainbow so as not to upset anyone. add wales and then leave it.

To be honest I think its pretty redundant now.
Why not just each country stick to its own flag?
I mean its not like Great Britain is a united country is it? Each country has its own identity, and its own flag, and again being honest, the other three mainly dislike the English and dont wish to be associated anyway...

should have been Mary Queen of Scots instead, yes, but her son sorted that out later and despite all the baloney over who should be the rightfull royal family we shouldn't even bother having one at all nowadays - I am Scottish too but also British

It's not really that we dislike the English per se,it's more the "We're better than you provincials" attitude of certain parts of the media and, lets face it,some of the people that gets our collective back up.For example, yesterday there was a major terrorist alert on a Ryanair plane, diverted to Prestwick with an RAF Tornado escort, and the ITV evening news didn't run it as the main report even though the airport was closed an sealed off.Had it involved Heathrow or Gatwick it would have been the main story.

yep that and the fact that when we do something as a British nation , English people say they do it like eg the English won the war

Bloody hell yeah, i can understand that growing up in Wales. It is bloody annoying. you also get it on a closer scale though in Wales (not sure what its like in Scotland) but the only things that happen in Wales (according to Welsh tv) are in Cardiff and area, nowhere else seems to matter.

Aye it was a Ryan Air flight from paris to Dublin...???

If its going to explode, Lets send it to Scotland instead of hundreds of airports on route in england...If it goes off it'll only be those jocks that get blown up....

I'v e also noticed over the years that as soon as trouble starts anywhere in the world the army top brass send in the jocks followed by the welsh and irish

Not the boys from england...

Yir flag...you can keep it
