Pro's brake discs when i conjunction with calipers and pads help arrest the forward motion of your bike
cons, without them you require soft targets for arresting forward motion

Stainless doesn't work very well as braking surface, very little friction and poor heat dissipation - hence cast iron braking discs - they work really well as the grains in the metal are arranged differently and they cope with the heat better. However, cast discs weigh a lot more which hinders rapid changes in direction but aids stability.

R1's still seem to brake pretty fucking rapid, if you ask me !!! :D :D

Well i've put em on and went up the pub and back, they're making that new mildly squeaky noise, i'll bed em in and let you know how i get on. if what your saying is the case nitro then they should get progressively worse the smoother the surfaces get..
I'll see how it goes but take it easy.

They'll actually get better the more they wear as surface irregularities form - grooves and pitting will give more for the pads to bite.
Don't get me wrong - they're adequate for regular road riding but there's a noticable difference when tested against iron ones (I had iron one's on my looney RG5 (as opposed to my boring RG5) and although they'd rust at a sniff of damp, I could destroy front tyres with them!)

i think the brakes on my harley are ok...... :D billet sixes stainless disks.....
me mates got stainless disks on his 7/11 and ive seen the booga do some silly stoppies.............
hes never mentioned being bothered
while your disks are an obviously important and integral part of your braking system id say the performance of your calipers is a far more critical factor
admittedly though if your working with some older single pot systems you need all the help you can get :D

or the strength of your hand and as JFP is right handed then he should have plenty of strength from the hours of practice he has using it in the comfort of his own home

stainless disks are ok till you have a lot of braking to do. they get feckin hot and if you have ordinary 'road' pads in yer brakes, they can fade cos things get too hot.
so he does need to worry then whether his discs are made of Stainless
You can go off people you know.. :D

The guy asks a serious question about his bike.
It takes 20 posts to get a sensible response.
If it wasn't for Nitrowing and Critch and Bill he wouls have kept looking for an answer only to find nothing but RUBBISH.
Ain't there enough threads dedicated to saying "bollox", "kant" or other inane babble without throwing a guys serious enquiry back in his face like fkin idiots.

Your right, altho by the time i got the answer i was after i'd already gone up the pub and asked me mate.
Tis a good job i have word of mouth eh?..
Next time i'll put this stuff on workshop which i spose is where i should've posted this in the first place.
Gotta agree with the kant stuff, sort of lost its charm now.

I am intending to put stainless disc on the rear of my bike where I need less performance from it but keep iron disc on the front where it gets lots of wear so it doesnt rust anyway.
Dunno what all the worry about stainless discs is, anyway.
Me and BL plus loads of camping kit on the XJR, looks like a block of flats going down the road.
It'll still stop quicker than any car following me will.

most bmw bikes came with stainless disks, drilled to help stopping in th wet. but they were poor brakes, only just marginal in the dry, but bm wouldnt have anything on their bikes back then that would rust, so looks took priority over function. they were also horrendously prone to cracking if they got overheated regularly between the drilled holes in the disk, i had 4 sets do this over the years. in all truth i think that the only thing stainless has going for it in braking terms is its corrosion resistance. i had a set of cast iron disks made for my last beemer which were such a leap forward in braking terms that i could hardly believe it. cast brakes work well cold, dont fade as much when hot, don crack as much and work in the wet, but they rust, so, yer pays yer money etc

I'll watch that then..i drilled the gullwing formation stylee holes, they do seem to stop well and have stopped sqeaking now. i shall keep an eye out for cracks between the holes then, thanks J..
