Has anyone ever used a starter motor as a means of providing a reverse on a bike engined trike.
I looked at the Trikeshop web site a couple of weeks ago and there was a photo of one which looked like it was linked to the diff at the back. This was done as a disabled adaption.
To use, I would think that the engine would be put in neutral, and the starter motor activated via a separate switch. This would engage on a toothed flywheel (as in a car).then be retracted during normal use.
My questions are:
1. How effective are they at providing a means of reversing the trike and
2. Would they drain the battery in use, as they use a fair amount of juice.

Thanks in advance.

I've seen this done afew times, so it does work. Try the N.A.B.D website for advice or Desparate Dans website is good for information like that, just 'Ask Desparate' he's very helpful and the site is very good aswell. ;)

I think youd need a bigger battery, and maybe a lorry starter motor not sure though.

you could also use a quaife diff with reverse built in.

I agree with above the site adress to ask desperate is www.chrisireland.co.uk. the other place to ask might also be www.chopperbuilder.co.uk

if the engine was running then it wouldnt be as critical if the battery was being drained, as long as the current drain didnt stall the engine. a car starter will easily move a car along, so it should pull a bike no bother.
