What exactly are the legal regs regarding lighting of rear numberplates?

I've currently got a small catseye above the numberplate on my trike and its a 3rd tail/brake as well as numberplate light (there's a clear window on the bottom of the catseye).

I want to replace this unit with an LED catseye and I've now had 2 to look at - the Highway Hawk 68-342 and what I think is a Motrax LEDLiteDistrik. The Motrax one does have a clear windows on its bottom to light the numberplate whereas the Highway Hawk one is just "normal" slightly obscured clear plastic.

In both cases they only give out a red light. Is this ok for numberplate lighting or is it required to be white light?

I had a look at www.motuk.com and all it says about numberplate lighting is "All original lamps must be fitted and working".

Does anyone know of a LED catseye tail/brake/numberplate unit that has white LEDs for the numberplate portion?

In which why is the Moltax think sold as doing numberplate light and its E-Marked as well - yet its only red LEDs?

Having just looked at the photo's of your trike, why don't you just pick up one or two from a car breakers, and fit them to the top of the plate ?

Cheap, does the job and fairly inconspicuous, but then what the phuck would I know !!! :D :D

Am looking for LED solutions (as I'm on an power "economy" drive :-) I've already replaced my front indicators and my control panel lighting with LEDs.

I'd hoped the Motrax unit would do the job (as the place I got it from said it had 4 white LEDs facing downwards) but when I briefly wired it up last night it all looked red.

I guess I could use one of these LED units just for tail/brake and also wire one, or more, LED numberplate units in as well - if there is such a thing.

Eventually I'd like to also replace my main "trailer" tail/brake/indicator units with LED ones if I can find suitable ones...

Thanks Dougie.

Hein Gericke's www site doesn't have any LED tails at all. I'll pop into the local shop tomorrow nite (late nite shopping) and check them out.

What you described sounds like exactly what I'm after.

Got there last night and bought the one I think you're on about (wide oval/catseye) - it seems exactly what I'm after :)

Picked up a catalogue as well so have got some reading material for weekend.
