Been there seen it and done it mate! The 650 is underpowered although they look OK. I had a 650 classic from new, spent a fortune on it. It looked ok but just didnt have the guts! The 1100 is exellent. The starter clutch problem was sorted out on the later viragos and the new dragstar 1100 doesnt have that problem. It was caused by yamaha using cheap bearings in the starter clutch sealed unit. You can saw the casing off, replace the bearings with good steel ones, spot weld it together and have years of trouble free starting! Thats wot I did with my 1100 after going through about two clutches a year! get a Virago 1100 or the newer dragstar 1100! They pull like a train and the engines are indestructable! A local bloke uses them for drag racing, he wont use anything else and he`s won more tropheys than you can shake a stick at! top bike!

1100 dragstars dont do corners and as for home service ha you need a huge workshop and tools to go with. front brakes dont stop you unless you leave bike standing for a week then the buggers dont free off. If you need a hydraulic lift for one ive got one for sale.

As far as I know the starter clutch problem was sorted on the later viragos so I dont think it applies to the dragstar at all! Me mates had an 1100 dragstar from new, when they first came out and he`s never had any problems with it! he`s done Farro and rides it daily to work so its done some miles without fuss! As for the year....I suppose it depends on how much ya wanna pay! I`d go for an older 1100 dragster for money reasons. I dont think you`ll find one thats got any problems! The owners tend to look after them anyway as they arnt the sort of bike that you hammer anyway. I can tell ya that my old 1100 virago lived outside with no cover and the chrome was faultless! dont know if the newer yams have the same quality finnish though. Me mates 1100 draggy lives in a garage and looks like new but then he does keep it clean. Oooooooo! :( I miss me old virago! :( part exd it for a 1340 Shovelhead! wot a feckin disaster that was! :(

True they dont handle like a crotch rocket but it depends on your riding style! I rode mine all over France and spain and they have some twisty roads up in the mountains! Never felt unsafe and mine could leave me mates FZR standing at the lights... well...for about 4 seconds... Its all low down torq!never got more than 120 out of it and ya do get a bit of a weave after 100! Ya get used to it! :D
