when selling anything on the net, usually for things over £1000

you get innundated with emails form foreigners asking for your 'last price' and offering a cashier's cheque.

these are all scams

a bit like the African prince/princess ones

easy to spot cos they're all from abroad and the person wants to buy yer goods without even seeing them...!! FFS

so look out for this

final point....why do the authorities not stop this????

it's the "www" bit thats the prob. world wide web.

it may be illegal here but not where it originated from.
most of these scams, and i get a lot of them. assume we have a similar banking system to the yanks.
i.e. that we can draw on an uncleared cheque, we can't..

plus and this is the real twat with our banks. if the cheque clears and you withdraw/spend the money. and it then turns out to be counterfeit. we are liable not the bank.
even though that is what the clearence time is for, to verify it.

yeah I did kinda wonder how the scam would work, I would never accept a cheque from a stranger anyway, and if I did I'd make sure the cheque was cleared before handing over goods. If the bank clear the cheque and try to say it isn't kosher I'd be inclined to say it was their problem since they'd cleared it..!

and on the subject

thanks to www

I can transfer money to someone and the second I transfer it the money leaves my account, but it can take 5 days or longer to reach the transferees account. So where is it in all that time? In the bank ether that's where! In sweden the govt forced the banks to do transfers in less time cos they realised us poor sods were being ripped off (interest etc) so now their banks do transfers in an hour and a half

so what's up with our Govt???

as if I need to ask?

we've gone soft, time we moaned a lot more and to the right people!!

When I move money from one of my accounts to another, I go to the bank, write a cheque for cash and a fill in a paying in slip to put the "cash" in the other account.

This makes it instant. The cashier usually clicks and doesn't actually bother getting the cash out of the drawer.

Seems a bit dumb as all you actually do is put cash on the bits of paper instead of your own name.

yeah, my bank will do instant transfers from one account to another within the same bank (and same name) on the internet, milliseconds it takes, but if you need to put money in an account at a different bank or into an account with a different name it takes too long :(

we found that out even on those standing order things

I`ve had a couple of these recently since I`m selling the trike, 1 asking how much I will take for the bike, ffs its got 3 wheels not 2.
the simple reply from me to any of these is; "cash only sale, buyer collects in person, all monies will be banked prior to me parting with the vehicle to prevent the possiblity of counterfeit notes"
I guess they never mail me again

I ignored them but werent sure wot they were about...so thanks again

many of these scams offering to buy your bike/trike/used underwear originate in holland, no idea why.
some are quite well done, even the grammer is good.
you bank the cheque,on the third day they are pestering you, you phone the bank and they tell you it's cleared, so you release the goods. next day maybe in the late afternoon you attempt to withdraw the money only to find the money is no longer there.
you get told it was counterfiet, but the bank is not liable, nor do they normally inform you of whats happened untill you find out the hard way.
yes it is wrong but like many of our big establishments they are a law unto themselves.
