View Full Version : Hospital tomorrow!
Yep, as of 11am Thursday I'm in Addenbrokes in Cambridge to have me shoulder repaired - bone is being taken from me hip and grafted in between the two pieces of my collar bone.
Should (allegedly) be out by the end of the weekend, so wish me luck!

Good Luck Nik, don't worry, bone grafts a doddle... had one hip to wrist (bike tumble as a learner possibly combined with repetitive strain injury, well it's still my favourite pastime). Over 20 years ago and absolutely no problems since.

Yeah, I got that last year when I went in to get my hand pinned.
Best thing is ... ready for this? When I was first in I was complaining of a pain in me lower left leg, three months later they x-rayed it and found a crack in me tibia (fibia? Haven't a clue what it's called ...). It was too late to do owt about it though ...
Since the accident in July I've been complaining about a pain in me right elbow, but was told that it was no doubt summat to do with me shoulder and they'd look after the shoulder was fixed.
Yesterday I told the quack about it again and this time, for the first time in nearly six months, he examined it and said; 'Hmm, you may have broken it ...'
Our NHS, eh? :(

And there's bugger all can be done, apart from replacing the disc, which carries mebbe a 1% risk of me ending up in a wheelchair or so they said.I'll stick with the pain and the painkillers thanks! :(

I've been suffering for years, on two occasions I've been offered an operation carrying 70% failure rate (thats right). I was told I would only get an MRI done if I agreed to surgery. Failure puts me in a wheelchair. No thanks.

Seems to be fairly common - I was wondering why my 'healed' broken leg was so painful all thru the summer of 2004, cos it took months of whinging to get them to really look at it again and discover it needed about 4 more ops to sort it out!
That bone graft job's good tho - my hubby had it on his upper arm (after they kept telling him it was healed - there y'go again!) and it sorted it out proper!

Was going to say 'Good News - Nik finally had his Op today' but after reading all these tales of medical disaster I'm not sure if it's good news or not!
tell us anyway, was it successful or what?

Can't tell you a lot .. they said 'yes it was successful & he'd been back on the ward about an hour, and was comfortable but still groggy'.
Nik may have a different opinion as to whether he's 'comfortable' or not tho

Hospitals are great, aren't they? In 1993, (on me burfday too!) I fell and hurt my foot and was taken in a big nee-naw taxi to the Bolton Royal Infirmary (which is now posh flats). They kept me there for four hours and told me that it was 'soft tissue damage' and sent me away, telling me to take paracetamol if it hurt.
A fortnight later, I was still in agony and went to Hope Hospital in Salford where they X-rayed it again and said "ah yes, you have three broken bones in your foot and you have chipped the ankle". They gave me a pair of crutches and said "do you want us to call a taxi for you?" The nurse had a dicky-fit when I said "no, but have you got some string so I can tie these crutches onto the bike?"

Apparently the op went well and they are looking at releasing him Friday. But Nik has announced that he wants to be out before then and trust me he knows how to mither! So watch this space for bad one handed typing which is probably about the same as his bad 2 handed typing!

Yep, they wanted to keep me in until feckin' Friday, but managed to persuade them that their lives would be a whole lot easier if they let me out NOW! So they did ... aren't they sensible? :D
And stay off the bike for a while
Don't have a lot of choice ... ;)

Sounds like you didn't have a lot of choice on that one either Nik !
