Can anyone tell me if its possible to charge up a gel type battery whilst its still on the bike???

Apparently Yes, But It Has To Be A Proper Charger Like An Optimate Or Such Like With Trickle Charge

Yep, get an Optimate Charger.
It comes with a very helpful little plug-in lead that you can leave connected to the battery. That way you can plug in the charger anytime without having to get yer toolkit out. :)

Don't try to do a "quick charge" (over 10 amps) on it. It will warp the plates in the cells and wreck the battery

Have you noticed that the little plug goes rotten over a period of time with all the wet weather we've been having ;)

Doesn't if you spray it with Silicone Lubricant (or use Silicone Grease) and tuck it up out the way.

The newer Optimate leads have a waterproof cap to prevent this problem. You can buy just the lead separately. (Its fused also)
