advise please

my virago 535xv has a pump system for the fuel, the tank on top is a working tank, but it is also running into the old tank with the pump system...
now could i attach a fuel tap to the top tank and run a direct feed into the carbs or do i have to use the fuel pump system....ie, to get the correct pressure
