Anybody got any clue on K series 8Valve BMWs?

Tried to start Kato the K100 after the weekend, used full choke cos it was a bit chill. Started fine and smooth, then cut out dead and bugger me if I can start her again. Didn't even catch a little, then battery was flatted.

There is Fuel going around the loop, I've swapped out the plugs, a bit wet but maybe due to turning her over a lot, all the plugs sparks when touched to the engine casing although maybe a little feeble. Fuses OK and fuel pump working, battery recharged.

I was trying to replace some ancient fuel and vacuum lines at the weekend but didn't get very far, the airbox hose is semi-stuck on and I don't want to rip them out without a spare to put in. Don't think I disturbed any of the wiring, except maybe the ones to the air-flow meter. I really don't want to start stripping out the injectors, though that'll be the next step once I get a replacement hose (like getting to the jam in a doughnut, you have to remove the dough before you get to the Jam...)

Any suggestions welcome

(PS Just thought ... I'll check the new K&N filter I put on, it seems seated right but maybe it got blocked somehow. It'll have to wait to the holidays, I dont have a garage or shed to muck around in.)

Hi Shaun....

If you go to Motobins website (I think it's http://www.motobins.co.uk/services.php) they have a tech help link that takes you to a lot of stuff for K's.

If thatlink doesn't work go to motobins.co.uk and click 'Technical Help' at the top of the page.

Cheers Matey, I'd seen that page before but completely forgot about it: one of the hints described my situation exactly...

Flooded Your K? The electronics will always provide enough fuel for a cold start, but supply of a matching quantity of air is up to you! In very cold conditions always hold the 'choke' at full travel, and if necessary open the throttle a little also, but be ready to shut it when the engine fires. Lots of failed attempts to start will flood the engine and wet the plugs, so don't rely on just tweaking the throttle a bit for cold starting!

It's possible I held the choke open too long and flooded her. I'll disengage the fuel pump and turn the cow over for a bit, might clean her out enough to start. Might clean the HT leads as well, not happy with the strength of the spark.

If that doesn't work Shaun you could also have a look here;

I got this from the Links at Motobins site>

looks like youve flooded the bitch.....put jumpers ontothe bike from another bike/car and open the throttle full...then press the starter button, and keep it that way untill it starts....you've probably got the crankcase full of fuel mixture and you need to clear it out for the bitch to fire up naturallly....

As A K100 trike owner....thats what I do when it floods

Cheers for your help you two you've put me on the path I think, tried an open throttle just now... although she didnt fire up she backfired a bit, so think she's on the mend. Advantage of a K100 bike over a trike is that I can put it on the side stand and let the crap come out the exhaust valves. I'll try that when I've topped up the battery.

Think the FI system has forced some petrol past the rings, though, I'm sure the oil level is higher than it was... bugger.

Thanks again, that seems to have got it going... Kato sounds a bit grumpy at being woken up though.....
