im thinking of ditchin my front mudguard would i get any grief of the old bill for riding without 1.

it's possible that you will... However my chop has no front guard, and never has had one, even passed mot without it?? and i have never been stopped yet? You don't half get wet thought, if you ride in the rain... :(

As far as I'm aware the only definition of a mudguard is something which covers the full width of the tyre. Nothing about circumferance. So a fork brace would be more than adequate.
However:- for Mot purposes, a quirk of motorcycle testing (as opposed to cars) is that if the tester doesn't like something he can refuse to test it.
