BPI: latest news
3 Aug 2005 - James Hudson
Source, BPI News
UK record companies' trade association the BPI (British Phonographic Industry) is today intensifying its campaign against large scale illegal distributors of music on the internet by lodging formal court proceedings for the first time against five uploaders in the UK.
The announcement comes amid clear indications that the record industry is turning the tide on illegal filesharing.
BPI chairman Peter Jamieson said, "Music fans are increasingly tuning into legal download sites for the choice, value and convenience they offer. But we cannot let illegal filesharers off the hook. They are undermining the legal services, they are damaging music and they are breaking the law."
Court proceedings
Civil proceedings are being issued today against five individuals who between them made 8,906 songs available for millions of people around the world to download without permission.
The three men and two women live in King’s Lynn, Crawley, Port Talbot, Brighton and South Glamorgan.
The BPI will claim compensation and costs on behalf of its member record companies whose music has been uploaded on to peer-to-peer networks without permission.
BPI General Counsel Geoff Taylor said, “So far 60 UK internet users have settled legal claims against them for illegal filesharing, paying up to £6,500 in compensation. We have tried to agree fair settlements, but if people refuse to deal with the evidence against them, then the law must take its course. That's why we have had no choice but to take these five individuals to the High Court. We will be seeking an injunction and full damages for the losses they have caused, in addition to the considerable legal costs we are incurring as a result of their illegal activity."
All five cases were the subject of a court order on March 11, requiring internet service providers to name the holders of accounts which had been used for illegal filesharing. The account-holders were first contacted by the BPI in April with the details of the case against them.
News of court action comes after weeks of good news for the record industry:
> June 27. Court rules against Grokster. The US Supreme Court ruled that filesharing services that distribute P2P software, with the object of promoting its use to infringe copyright, are liable for the acts of users who subsequently upload or download music illegally.
> July 11. The BPI announces that download sales in the first half of 2005 have passed the ten-million mark, almost twice the level for the whole of 2004.
> July 13. Prime Minister Tony Blair lends his support to legal downloading, buying the first single by parliamentary rock band MP4. “The record industry is at the vanguard of our new internet economy and I am pleased to support legal downloading," he said.
> July 28. Independent research from The Leading Question acknowledges the loss to the record industry caused by illegal filesharing - it estimates a loss of nine CDs per filesharer per year - but scotches the idea that illegal filesharers are forever lost to the legal music market. On the contrary it suggests they are fast becoming enthusiastic buyers of legal downloads.
BPI chairman Peter Jamieson said, "The fight against internet piracy will not be won overnight, but increasingly we are winning the argument."

Try Kazza Lite Resurrection i find it often has more success in getting a download than Shareaza don't know why as they use a lot of the same networks and supposedly has no spyware (i can't find any in it).
Kazza Lite Resurrection (http://compnetworking.about.com/od/kazaa/qt/kliteresurrect.htm)
It says: Note: Users of Kazaa Lite Resurrection may encounter difficulty connecting to the same P2P sharing network as newer Kazaa and other supported FastTrack network clients.
But i have had no trouble connecting!
If you want to give yourself some anonymity get a program like "Complete Anonymous Web Surfing" you might even find it on P2P if your using something like Kazza  It's easy to use and hides your IP number by using a proxy IP number and can be set to change the number every minute or so (a gattling proxy) well worth trying, you can also use it when surfing normally but you can get some odd results because if you are using a Spanish IP number and going through a Spanish server and use google you will get the Spanish version of google, can be interesting :p

If you use ntl cable, get grabit, it uses news groups so not p to p, much faster. A pain to set-up but well worth it.

Well you could download Limewire lite (the free version) and then use it to download limewire pro (the pay version) for free! However, I use Bearshare, It's a lot better than anything else I've used. The player's pants, but it usually does very well on choice and is pretty quick to download.

I use emule and kazaa lite. Best way to avoid getting caught is to move every complete file out of the download folder as soon as you have it.
You only get caught by having albums in there. Anyone can find out what you have to share so if you have umpteen albums in there, then you run the risk.
Soulseek. Better than Limewire as you can download complete albums at a single click. Allegedly.

Don't know about emule but you can turn off the "allow others to search my shared folder" in Kazza Lite Resurrection ;>)
Pear Guardian can be useful as it acts just like a firewall but all it stops is a list of known bad IP's which can be updated (it's not a antivirus or adware blocker) of peeps you don't want searching your PC just have a look at the IP's it blocks as it also has the names of them, that will freak you out  :D
It can also slow down your PC if it's not got a decent fast processor or a good bit of RAM as by the way it works it checks every single hit on your PC which if you have a look at the hits log file can be hundreds in a couple of seconds.
If you want to check how secure you PC is check out this site and run the checks especially the "file sharing" and "port checks"

Oh what a web we weave.... :p
I've been using Warez recently and its pretty good, less corrupt files than I was getting with KaZaa Lite.
