Trikes and the law

I know therewas something on the old forum about being disabled and riding a trike on a provisional liscence. Could anyone please answer if this is right/wrong.

This I ask on behalf of my wife who had a stroke 3years ago. Bearing this in mind I am also on the look out for a automatic trike for her. So if you know of one or have one that you are willing to sell let me know

After buying a trike for Sam ive come to the conclusion that if you want to know anything dare i say it ask the police cos i tryed to find out about MOT laws and other stuff,but every where seems to vary a lot!

sheltie, i think that if you adapt or build a trike that is a single seater then you can ride it on a provisional licence,give the dvla a ring,you will usually find that they are quite helpful

yes ya can av trike with single seat on "l"plates.....if ya wife has informed d v l a of her stroke u will b lucky if she can ride or drive till she gets medical confirmation from hosspital or her g.p,

Stroke happened three years ago and informing the DVLA is only a matter of course. You only have to tell the DVLA and required to get said GP letter if you already hold a full license otherwise wait two years. I only know as my job involves working daily with stroke survivors and it is aa question that I field almost weekly.

Thanks for all your help. Please keep it coming in. Pat Nabbed were great when I last talked to them. But being a lazy bast'rd I decide to ask here instead of looking round the house for the info that they gave me.

Sheltie, it's simple. if you want to ride a trike disabled or not on a provisional then the trike must have only 1 single seat. or you must ride with a fully quilified driver at all times as you would as a learner in a car. I know this as fact as i have had to arrange & sort the details for someome. If you want to know more contact the DVLA. These are who i called to get all the info.

Most of this is quite correct. Though you will be better contacting the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) for these types of question as the DVLA have an unfortunate habit of giving incorrect information. The DSA are on 0115 901 2500.
