a mate has a grey import version of the twin spar from GS500E (the newer shape version, slightly GSXR lookalike engine)

Tickover 'fluctuates' really badly, dropping to a stall.

My first thoughts were blocked air screw / tickover adjustment doofer - but the carbs have been taken apart several times by 'professionals' and amatuers, none of which has made a difference.

happens hot and cold

occasionally just completely dies when hot (may be a separate problem - i reckon dead coil...)

She took it back to the shop - and they gave her a dismissive 'its perfectly alright darlin' plently of life left in that moter innit' attitude - this is after being dropped off by the AA / RAC

Sods law of couse denotes that it runs fine whenever she takes it to a bike shop

Any other suggestions?

one thing I'm thinking is the same problem I had on my TDM - which is worn emulsion tubes - i had some really weird problems with that.

There's a site which specialises in GS bikes, http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/index.php
You'll find everything you need to know about carburation on it(with a bit of searching, but they do have a search function). There's a couple guys post there who've forgotten more about carbs than the rest of us will ever know.
Unfortunately the site's crashed at the mo,but keep checking,it's definitely worth it.
Thanks to the advice there my GS550 is now better carburated than it was when I bought it 18 years ago.
