I said this would happen.
After the event the locals were screaming and shouting wanting them handing back, wanting a Brit apology etc etc etc.
What they really wanted was money.
OK
So the local Brit administration diverts some cash, earmarked for local development anyway, and says "build yourselves a nice new jailhouse fellas."
And it all blows over.
And Brit intelligence keeps an eye on all those local officials who were shouting. ;)

We have just demonstrated just how weak and lily livered our decision makers really are.
And in doing so, we have opened the door for all the litigation vultures out there.
In the Arab world, they understand one thing and one thing only; the mailed fist used relentlessly

They seem to have a better understanding of bribery.

They seem to have a better understanding of bribery.
That's because the Arab Society works on the basis of 'Baksheesh'
which is bribery, yes.
Q. What's flat, black and glows in the dark??
A. The Middle East 15 minutes after the oil runs out.
As told to me by a Merkin
the fact that the two SAS guys that the soldiers were trying to rescue had been handed over to local militia should forever be a let out clause for the government of this country as far as compensation is concerned.

The correct answer to "we want compensation" was a full on air strike to give them something to really moan about.
listening to the story unfold on R4 has shown me just how fecking useless our politicians are.

Look, The whole point of this war (Apart from getting rid of a monster who was embarrassing the "Big Boys" of international politics) was not to destroy the country but give it the rule of Law.
We went in to rescue some of our own, 'kin excellent, but we then said that this was a necessary action to correct an illegal act, we don't intend to punish the local people by depriving them of legal resources, and here's the cash to put the damage to the local infrastructure right... bloody clever.
The only guerilla war that an occupying power has ever won has been Malaysia in the 1950's, in which Britain subverted the revolutionaries by education, benevolence, construction and consistancy.
Hard for a fanatic to rally locals against the "evil invaders" when they've just built you a new school, sorted out the towns plumbing and are training a police force that (at leasts tries) to treat everyone justly. That's why the fanatics are suicide-bombing the brave locals who are signing up to try and sort out the police and local government, they know that Chaos is their only chance to get power back.
The "Speak Softly and Carry A Big Stick" approach seems to be something the Americans have forgotten, and we can be very good at.
