Anyone know whether it would be possible to get a car engined bike, such as a Pinto registered thru the msva regs now?
Or are there restrictions such as you must cover the engine up or something?

i dont think just an engine swap would require msva...
keep - for the first day - the std forks wheels etc etc and i think it would be eligible as the standard bike..

Have to say it, but I was going to build a bike with a car engine, the last engine id choose would be a pinto. They weigh a bloody ton for what they are. I think even the rover v8 weighs less physically. Theyre a huge great donking lump of ugly cast iron. Plus they actually cost money now since all the locost'ers are using them in the seven replica's....
You'd be better going for something with less weight, my personal fav would be one out of the likes of a toyota (4agze lump is small and fairly tuneable), the venerable old RV8 (if you can squeeze in 8 cylinders) or anything alloy and modern. I changed a 1.2 injection motor in the wife's phase2 clio the other week and could pick the lump up on my own, not something you could do with a pinto and not have a hernia after.....
Hows this for a thought, use a complete fwd motor/box out of something small and mount it fore and aft, instead of across, and lock off the forward going driveshaft or weld the diff up or something and use a shaft drive bike. Have no idea what the ratios would be like tho, do diff's rotate clockwise normally too?... Probally utter madness, but a thought, but definatly off topic sorry!

In line is how id prefer (not accross cos that would look to awkward)to set the engine like the Awol Pinto and later 100% Genius piece of kit dubbed 'Franklyn Glint'
Then id use a front engined engine just like you suggested. Pinto only because i have a spare one, and im poor.
Just wondering whether it would need msva or if i could slip it thru as an 'engine change' ie just change the engine and details on logbook to the car engine numbers and send it to dvla.
Just dont want the hassle and expense of msva if it aint necessary!!

not mine, thats the one that was just on ebay, unfortunatly those pictures will dissapear when it gets past the time limit on ebay,,,about 30 days i think, but if anyone wants the guys email address to ask questions on how it was built, please email me and i'll pass it on.
I'm building summit simmilar, but i'll be building mine around a 1600 fiai twin cam, as that engine just looks a little better:)

that one has a twin starter motor bell housing of a transit, he has the sprigot bearing and in a plate bolted to the rear of the bell housing holding a bearing, which is holding the rear end of the gearbox front shaft, infront of this bearing, between the bearing and the clutch he has a cam shaft pully.
on the off side where the other starter motor housing is, he has another plate holding a bearing, and to the rear of this is a hole cut and another bearing housed, between these bearings is a final drive shaft, with another cam belt pulley attached, and a small 1.8 diesel bottom pully belt on it,,,,
so you got 1 gear,,,,,just twist and go

I can also remember a blue pinto engined bike, had a wrap round alloy (FZR possibly) frame.
PENNYWISE keep us updated with the progress on your bike,I've been thinking about something like that myself, pref.with gears!!

It's an engine change. As a solo the bike would still be a 'Bicycle'
