Mrs. Smith [reading her horoscope]: You have green, scaly skin, and a soft yellow underbelly with a series of fin-like ridges running down your spine and tail. Although lizardlike in shape, you can grow anything up to thirty feet in length with huge teeth that can bite off great rocks and trees. You inhabit arid sub-tropical zones and you wear spectacles.

Mrs. Jones: It's very good about the spectacles.

Mrs. Smith: It's amazing! :D

aw thanks guys you've made me laugh

I used to believe in astrology, not horoscopes tho

I do think there is something in it

but nothing mysterious

maybe one day we'll know the science behind it?

same as telepathy and stuff

I dont believe in any of it, I believe if something happens it happens.

Nah! sorry Dorro, I agree we should take astrology seriously, but I don't mean we should believe in it. I mean fighting it seriously instead of humouring it as a piece of harmless fun. There's this thing called being so open-minded your brains drop out.
I dont mean to be rude, but if you consider how little it means to say something like "Uranus moves into Aquarius". Aquarius is a miscellaneous set of stars all at different distances from us, which have no connection with each other except that they constitute a (meaningless) pattern when seen from a certain (not particularly special) place in the galaxy (here). A constellation is not an entity at all, not the kind of thing that Uranus, or anything else, can sensibly be said to 'move into'.
The shape of a constellation, moreover, is ephemeral. A million years ago our Homo erectus ancestors gazed out nightly at a set of very different constellations. A million years hence, our descendants will see yet other shapes in the sky, and their astrologer (if our species has not grown up and sent them packing long since) will be fabricating their oracles on the basis of a different zodiac.
Scientific truth is too beautiful to be sacrificed for the sake of light entertainment or money. Astrology is an aesthetic affront. It cheapens astronomy, like using The Rollins band for commercial jingles! Anyway, if anyone knows next saturdays lottery numbers Im Intrested in hearing from you! ;)

Come on now dude - a rational existence is so boring!!! I'd much rather dance round magical rings at midnight, believe in fairies, astrology and star gaze than live a dull life where everything is explained, put away in files and no one believes in anything except what they can see.
My own little world is so much more exciting!!!!

That's one thing that always bothered me. When Mystic Meg was doing the lottery. If she was that good, she wouldn't need to work, as she'd have won the lottery...

I base my ideas on astrology from 30 years of research

ie since I was 9 I have asked everyone I've met what their 'sign' is then I have compared their personality traits with what it says in the books. Not always 100% as you can imagine, but close enough for me to wonder why it works, when rationally it shouldn't.

I once read that since the moon can affect the tides, and since our bodies are +70% water, then why shouldn't the position of the planets affect our brains? I also heard that the moon effects the brains of mentally susceptable people, which is where the word 'lunatic' is derived from...

all I'm saying is that perhaps there is a scientific explanation which we might discover one day

after all, I'm sure the ancient peoples could never have guessed the scientific reasons behind things like lightning, static electricity, magnetism, the seasons etc

in fact we still don't know why a magnet effects iron....

strange that cos 70% of the earths surface is covered by water .. spooky eh lol :D

Erm, sorry Doro, but we do! which is just as well for bikers cos our engines wouldnt work otherwise! The electro magnetic forces invoved in the atomic structures of elements is pretty well cut and dried as far as physics is concerned. The magor sticking point now is how to encorporate Einstiens laws of gravity into quantum physics. Anyway, im no chemist (well, some times at the weekend!) I do know a bit about psychology though and all the "research" thats been done on astrology proves nothing at all in scientific terms. It does bring up some intresting observations on human nature though!
Anyway, Science is NOT about absolute truths! Its about finding workable answers to practical problems. If a theory by its own nature is not disproveable, then it isnt, by definition, scientific. i.e. its quite possible that the sun is pulled accross the sky by an undetectable chariot driven by a large woman with a spiky weapon! I cant disprove it, but it isnt scientific because I CANT disprove it! I could say I believe that Mars is made of green cheese! It would be a scientific theory due to the fact that you can hop onto a rocket and go there to see for your self! And prove me wrong of course! That is the nature of science! Disprovability. Oh! bollocks! I dont know why I sterted this thread anyway! Oh! I just remebered....Can anyone who knows next weeks lottery numbers give me a call please! ;) Peace to all! :D

Yup! quite right! The Moon is close enough to exert a force on us little carbon based entities! very unlikly that any planets can though! We get stronger influances from radio broadcasts and stuff! Erm.. now thats a thought! maybe i could invent a new occult forcasting ability! Forget tea leaves, put aside your palms! leave your head bumps alone for i, Rogue Monkey! have invented.....erm.....Radio broadcast divination! Wey hey! Now then, wot are those elusive six numbers I need! Bye the way, your all invited to Las Vegas next week after I win the lottery! We can all go on a charted jet with a bunch o Harleys waiting for us at the airport! What a rally that would be! :)
For my next trick i will be turning base metals into gold! :D ;)

Erm, sorry Doro, but we do!

no, what I meant was.....

how does a magnet magnetise iron? at the atomic level? We know all about poles and induction etc, but what is it that the lines of force do to another element that causes it to have lines of force? Do they just rub off from one element to another? why is it magnetism can be lost through heat or a sharp knock? They used to say all the little atoms are bipoles and the magnet causes all the dipoles to line up thereby becoming magnetised

but they don't actually know that this is what happens

no more than a good guess really

I don't take em seriously. how can 1/12th of the population of earth have the same thing happen to them at one time? :D

Ang on how many signs are there? :D

Rogue Monkey
12-08-2004, 10:59 AM
Erm... dont know how many signs, about 12 I think! Trouble is if you live in the southern hemisphere you see a different set of constellations so does that mean all the Aussies have very different personalites than us northeners? Erm....come to think of it!......
