If it's a jap bike, the VJMC can help with year of manufacture, also with proof of same for getting an age-related plate. Prolly have to join tho I guess.

the vin number on a car is 17 digits, will this be the same on a bike, as i can only find a 10 digit number on its plate which is the same on the head stock

The number of numbers makes no difference I believe they are all different. On mine there are only 7 or 8 numbers. Looks like you found it.. Now do a google search for frame numbers and hopefully you will find the answers..

Some haynes manuals give a listing of frame number runs for each model and years of manufacture, which is not entirely accurate, but will give you an idea. Owners clubs (and you don't normally have to join, but may be charged a fee) or manufacturers.
The VMCC did mine on behalf of the dealer who sold it, but they did get the engine date wrong (though that may have been deliberate to avoid registration problems) as they listed it as 1940, the same age as the frame, when it was actually manufactured in 1943.
Good luck mate.....

Get very drunk and stoned and then, in a silly drunk/stoned voice, politely ask your bike how old it is. If it answers you, then the beer and drugs must be of exceptionally good quality. :D

Vehicle Identification Plates (VIN)

Q . My newly acquired Motorcycle has the following VIN JYA3JCN05PA013119 stamped on frame which I am trying to understand for Parts ordering etc. I have deduced that:
It's not a California model.
Build date 10/92 from frame label.
JYA code for Yamaha Motor Corporation USA CYRESS.
Engine Number 3JC - 013119.
3JC should be 3JCA:3JCB for 1993 according to Haynes.
N05 don't know.
PA013119 sequential Production Number but according to Yamaha 1993 service data sheet XV535E,EC the numbers start at PA014101.
Customised with Ride to Live parts.
Can anyone put me on the right track? I have tried the VOC US
Please contact

A . Hi! In checking the Clymer manual I have just bought the engine number you list is for a U.S. model XV535A, 1990. If you ever need a manual, I highly recommend this one. Loads of info. Hope I've helped you out
